About the piece

Material becoming form.

The Formations collection brings together pieces made through very different ways of working with clay. I might throw on the wheel, build from slabs, join small pinched pieces, combine different clay bodies or alter a surface with minerals. What connects them is an interest in following what the material becomes rather than beginning with a fixed outcome.

I leave traces of that making visible: finger marks, joins, fissures, textures and shifts in colour. These are not imperfections to conceal, but part of how the form develops. Each piece emerges through an exchange between material, hand and process.
