About the piece

Material becoming structure.

The Making of Stone emerged through an intuitive process of tearing, folding and assembling slabs of clay. I was exploring verticality and layered forms, allowing each addition to redirect the sculpture rather than working towards a fixed image.

The form appears fragile, yet the joined clay builds its own strength and supports itself. Its edges, seams and irregular planes remain visible, holding the physical evidence of how it was made.

The sculpture reflects the weathering and resilience of the Australian landscape. As someone moves around it, overlapping surfaces shift and new relationships appear, allowing the work to be encountered differently from every side.

The Making of Stone was selected as a finalist for the Paddo Sculpture Prize 2026 and for presentation in its finalist exhibition in Woollahra.
